This first collection has its origin in an MFA program at Antioch in LA in 2009. I stopped after a year to assist first one, then the other, of my parents pass on. In the course of the grief I lost my voice.
It came back one day this year when a friend with angel hair told me he played hockey. Within minutes out came a flood of images and the complete poem Mean Angels.
Many of the poems in this collection Out date back to the year in LA, while others are new, which explains the variations in tone.
I am especially interested in alternate life forms - aliens, angels, mermaids, fairies. To me these embody inhuman and often superhuman mentalities that allow me to reflect more clearly on the human condition, and to be honest, to consider more interesting alternatives.
The most interesting experience I am currently having when writing is that while I consciously follow a metaphor through various transmogrifications, I myself am surprised by what turns out to be the last line. I often cannot say what it means but I know this is the line that holds the truth of the poem.
